National Bourbon Month ~ Old-Fashioned

A good Old-Fashioned is the epitome of a classic cocktail. As with most classic cocktails, there are dozens of variations and craft options. I prefer mine to be clean and simple. With nothing to hide behind, this is the time to use a great bourbon.

  • 1 Sugar Cube

  • Aromatic Bitters

  • 2 oz. Bourbon

  • Orange Peel

  • Maraschino Cherry (optional)

  1. In an rocks glass, muddle the sugar cube (or ½ tsp. sugar) with 2 or 3 dashes of bitters

  2. Rotate the glass to coat the bottom with the sugar grains

  3. Add a large ice cube to the glass ~ a single large cube prevents the drink from becoming too watery as the ice will melt slower than small cubes

  4. Pour the bourbon over the ice cube

  5. Stir the cocktail to mix

  6. Twist the orange rind over the cocktail to release the essential oils

  7. Garnish with the rind and a cherry if desired

For Old-Fashioneds, there are several good bourbon options. I like Buffalo Trace or Four Roses Small Batch; both contain hints of sweetness and caramel balanced with subtle notes of spice.
